"The Monk Who Died Standing." The warrior monk "Benkei" is one of Japan's greatest folk heroes. According to legend, he defended a bridge against hundreds of enemies to protect his lord, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. After the battle, the attackers finally approached and discovered something astonishing: Benkei had died from his wounds while still standing. The image became so famous that "Benkei's Standing Death" remains one of Japan's most legendary tales of loyalty and courage.
