Japan has a fascinating system called ふるさと納税 (ふるさと のうぜい), often translated as “hometown tax.” Despite the name, it's essentially a donation system: people can financially support a municipality of their choice, even if they don't live there. In return, they may receive local products such as rice, fruit, seafood, or regional specialties. The system has become a major way for people to 寄付 (きふ)—donate—money to communities across Japan. Your tax money can literally “gather” around a town you've never lived in.
