Every February, Japanese families celebrate Setsubun (節分) by throwing roasted beans while shouting 'Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!' ('Demons out! Good fortune in!'). The word 節分 means 'seasonal division' and marks the transition from winter to spring according to the traditional Japanese calendar. The bean-throwing ritual symbolically separates bad luck from good fortune.
