府

Urban Prefecture, Government Office

JLPT N2

Interesting Fact

Japan has only two prefectures that use 府 instead of 県: δΊ¬ιƒ½εΊœ (Kyoto Prefecture) and 倧ι˜ͺ府 (Osaka Prefecture). This makes 府 a distinctive administrative kanji.

Memory Trick

Imagine a government office building with the signs 'Kyoto Prefecture' and 'Osaka Prefecture' outside. That government office helps you remember 府 means 'urban prefecture.'
