Japanese uses 道具 (どうぐ) for much more than hammers and screwdrivers. In traditional arts, equipment can become part of the discipline itself. A tea master has carefully chosen utensils, a calligrapher has brushes and ink tools, and a martial artist has specialized equipment. The word 道具 can therefore refer to the objects that allow someone to practice their particular 道 (way). In Japan, the right tool can be considered part of the art.
