Japanese commonly describes the Earth as 地球 (ちきゅう)—literally, the “earth sphere.” The word gives a wonderfully simple image: 地 for the earth or ground, plus 球, a round sphere. You'll also encounter 球体 (きゅうたい) for a three-dimensional sphere and 球形 (きゅうけい) for spherical shape.
