Degree, Time, Occasion

たび (tabi)

JLPT N4

Interesting Fact

The original idea behind 度 was connected to measuring—using a standard to determine how much or how far something was. 📏 From this developed the idea of a degree or measured amount. The same concept eventually expanded into words such as 温度 (temperature), 角度 (angle), and 速度 (speed). So whenever Japanese uses 度 for a measurement, it is carrying an idea that goes back to the ancient concept of measuring against a standard.

Memory Trick

📏 A hand reaches into a measuring box to check the exact degree—that's 度.
