Become Accustomed, Get Used To
なれる (nareru), ならす (narasu)
Interesting Fact
Chopsticks feel inseparable from Japanese dining today, but their widespread use developed gradually. Early Japanese elites adopted chopsticks from continental East Asia, and their use eventually spread more broadly through Japanese society. Over generations, people became so accustomed to eating with them that using a fork can sometimes feel less natural for certain Japanese dishes. It's a nice reminder that many things we think are “normal” were once unfamiliar habits that people had to learn.
Memory Trick
Your heart(忄) sees the same shellfish(貝) every day until it says, “Oh, you again? I’m used to you!” That’s 慣!
