By the Edo period, being a samurai didn't necessarily mean spending your life fighting. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, many samurai became bureaucrats, administrators, accountants, teachers, and clerks. As Japan enjoyed a long period of relative peace, the shogunate needed people who could manage domains, collect taxes, maintain records, and administer towns. Some samurai families essentially became hereditary office workers—carrying swords as a symbol of status while spending their days surrounded by paperwork rather than battlefields.
