Idea, Intention, Meaning

JLPT N4

Interesting Fact

The traditional explanation of 意 is surprisingly human: it combines 音 (sound/words) with 心 (heart/mind). The idea is that you hear someone's words and use your heart to understand what they really mean. 🧠❤️ That's why 意 developed meanings such as intention, thought, feeling, and meaning. It also explains why Japanese has words like 意味 (meaning), 意図 (intention), and 意志 (will). In other words, 意 isn't simply "an idea"—it's the thought or intention hiding behind what someone says.

Memory Trick

“❤️ Listen to the sound(音) of someone's heart(心) to understand their true intention—that's 意!”
