The Japanese word 経験 (keiken) means “experience.” The first kanji, 経, carries the idea of something passing through a course or going through a process. This gives the word a beautiful underlying image: experience is what you gain by going through things. You don't simply “have” experience—you travel through events, mistakes, challenges, and lessons. That same idea appears in 経過 (keika), the passage of time or progress of an event. So 経 quietly connects the physical idea of passing along a route with the much more abstract idea of living through something.
