Paper

かみ (kami)

JLPT N4

Interesting Fact

Traditional Japanese homes famously used shōji, wooden frames covered with translucent paper. 🏯 That sounds ridiculously fragile, but the paper had an important purpose: it let soft daylight enter while still providing privacy. Instead of filling rooms with heavy walls, people could slide the panels aside and completely change the layout of the house.

Memory Trick

“🪁 Tie a thread (糸) to a sheet of paper and send it flying like a kite—that's 紙!”
