Interesting Fact
One of the more surprising words containing 許 is 許嫁 (いいなずけ), meaning fiancé(e). The pronunciation is completely different from what a beginner might expect from the individual kanji. The use of 許 in 許嫁 reflects a time in ancient Japan when marriages were arranged between families and required the approval or “permission” of both families.
