Remember, Learn, Wake Up

おぼえる (oboeru), さめる (sameru), さます (samasu)

JLPT N3

Interesting Fact

For Buddhist monks, staying awake during meditation could be a real challenge. 🧘‍♂️ In traditional Buddhist practice, drowsiness and sleepiness were considered obstacles to concentration. Monks developed practices to overcome them, including walking meditation rather than always sitting. Some accounts describe practitioners washing their faces or changing posture when they became sleepy. The goal wasn't simply to avoid falling asleep—it was to maintain a clear, alert mind. In Japanese Buddhist temples, the idea of awakening the mind became an important part of religious practice.

Memory Trick

“🧘 After seeing(見) a Smiling Buddha, mind “awakens” like a light bulb, and we “remember” to stay present—that's 覚!”
