In Japanese traditional arts, there is an idea called 守破離 (Shu-Ha-Ri): first, faithfully follow the established form; then break away from it; finally, develop your own style. This philosophy appears in martial arts, tea ceremony, and other traditional disciplines. The surprising part is that breaking the rules is not considered the beginning of mastery—it comes after mastering the form first. In karate, for example, students repeat established movements until they become second nature. Only then can they adapt and create something of their own.
