In Japanese schools, companies, and community groups, people are often assigned a specific 係 (kakari)—a small responsibility that keeps things running. A student might become the 黒板係 (blackboard person), while another handles classroom plants or distributing papers. It reflects a familiar Japanese idea: instead of leaving every task to one leader, everyone takes responsibility for a small part of the group. That is why 係 appears in words for people “in charge of” specific duties, from school helpers to event staff.
