Gather, Collect
あつ(まる) (atsumaru), あつ(める) (atsumeru)
Interesting Fact
At Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha, thousands of red torii gates form the famous Senbon Torii tunnels. Many were donated by individuals and businesses as offerings to Inari. As donations accumulated over generations, more and more gates were added until the hillside became a seemingly endless tunnel of torii. What looks like one giant structure is actually thousands of individual contributions gathered together—a perfect image for 集.
Memory Trick
The standalone kanji 隹 (tori / chui) specifically means "short-tailed little bird" as an archaic character and radical. 木 = Kanji for Tree. “Birds gather on the tree.”
