Serve, Work

つか(える) (tsukaeru)

JLPT N4

Interesting Fact

Japanese doesn't have just one simple idea of work. There is 仕事 (しごと) for a job/work, 働く (はたらく) for working, 勤める (つとめる) for being employed, and 仕える (つかえる) for serving someone. 💼 Each word carries a slightly different relationship to work. 仕 is particularly interesting because its older sense focuses less on "having a job" and more on doing something in service to another person or purpose.

Memory Trick

“A Person(亻) is born to “serve” the Earth(土).”
