Visit almost any Shinto shrine in Japan and you'll find a pair of stone guardian lions known as "Komainu" standing at the entrance. One keeps its mouth open, while the other keeps its mouth closed. Together they represent the beginning and the end, the first and the last, creating a balance that has protected shrines for centuries.
